I Cant Kill The Weeds.

I Cant Kill The Weeds. I moved to Idaho about 12 years ago (we moved away more than 3 years ago). When I moved there I frequently visited my new brides grandma who, amongst other things, was great at gardening. One of the major pains in her life was a weed called Morning Glory, aka Field Bindweed. It is pretty stuff, but it takes over your yard, wraps around other plants, and spreads kind of like strawberry plants (where a shoot travels above ground and then roots somewhere else). Its actually pretty nasty. Grandma would call this, I think, Satans star. She really, really hated this weed. She told me that you just cant get rid of it. There is no poison, no strategy. Makes sense, considering the roots are known to grow more then six feet underground. Heck, what do I know about weeds? Ill trust a gardener who has been doing this more decades than I could imagine. Fast forward about 10 years, Im now in Utah and working on my own weed control strategy. Morning Glory is prevalent in my yard and garden, as I havent been quite sure how to get rid of it. I also have a dandelion problem, and I found some good spray that doesnt affect the grass but really does kill the dandelions. As I sprayed them one afternoon I thought Im going to spray this Morning Glory vine and see what happens. It died a few days later. For over 10 years I had this expert voice in my head telling me that it was impossible, and just on a whim I proved it wrong. It made me think about other things that I have been told, and how that has shaped my decisions. A job search takes one month for every 10,000 that you need to make. In other words, if I want to make $80,000, it will take eight months to find my next job. Of course this is not true! I think this is probably a good rule of thumb for financial planning, and will be affected by the state of your relationships (aka, networking). College is critical, masters is becoming critical. I do not regret my decision to get a CIS degree, and an MBA. And, Im a huge proponent of furthering your education. However, please dont think that getting degrees, even in hot fields, is going to minimize any pain or problems in a job search or your career management. The same goes for degrees from these online MBA rankings. Even with my CIS degree, my MBA and a job seekers market I could hardly get an interview. Dont waste time or money on cookie cutter professional help (namely, resume writers and career coaches). Im a DIY (do it yourself) kind of guy. When I was let go the idea of hiring someone to write my resume or give me career coaching was crazy. Shoot, aside from all of my schooling I was smart and achieved job titles included IT Manager, VP and general manager. Im sure that if I had professional help with my resume and my job search strategy I would have landed a fulfilling position much earlier (of course, JibberJobber would have been a fleeting thought, so its good I didnt get help but I strongly recommend getting professional help). That Life is for other people, not me. I grew up middle class, so that life would be the poor folks or the rich people. Guess what? I can be rich too. Im not sure how it is going to happen, but Id like to try a life of no financial worries. On the flip side, I can be one of the poor folk. I didnt expect to, after all of my education and accomplishments, but unemployment has a funny way of draining your bank account and landing you right in the middle of the poor category. While its been a good experience for me, I dont recommend it. Job boards are useless. Well, thats a message that I took away from a two day career management class. I misunderstood the real message at first but now realize that job boards are not necessarily the best way to find a job to apply to but they are an excellent source to collect information for networking (or a job search, obviously) and do competitive intelligence research. And to top it all of, its cool that they actually do work. I know plenty of people who have found their current job on a job board. Entrepreneurialism is for that crazy uncle whos on his 12th multilevel company, or for someone like Bill Gates or Steven Covey or someone like that (but certainly not for me). Heres another huge extreme its for the nutty guy who has never, and will never be successful. Or its for the uber-successful person who has already done that and is now worth billions of dollars (and somehow made it look easy). I fall right in the middle, I think that everyone should create some kind of side business, or additional income stream, so that we arent all dependent on one employer and one income (which is rather fickle). The bolded statements above are not my beliefs, they are just some old business wives tales. I dont subscribe to them, they are too superficial and outdated. What I Learned Starting a Business (VIDEO CASE STUDY) - Classy Career Girl

What I Learned Starting a Business (VIDEO CASE STUDY) Hey everyone! I wanted to stop and share some business startup success stories! My Corporate Rescue Plan clients are knocking it out of the park these days! Yesterday, I received these two videos from my clients, Lisa and Mary Ellen. I was so inspired and excited for them that I decided that this month I wanted to do something special. (But first, watch these!!) Hello, its Lisa here from lisavillaume.com, and today, I want to talk to you about Corporate Rescue Plan from ClassyCareerGirl.com. Joining the Corporate Rescue Plan was probably the scariest thing Ive ever jumped before. Like, who is the world would invest in themselves to learn and grow as a person so that they could escape the corporate rat race? Certainly, not this little lady! I always grew up thinking that climbing the corporate ladder was the only way to achieve success in the business world. And boy was I wrong! Thanks to Anna at Classy Career Girl, Im on my way to creating a life that I love and creating a successful business. The most important thing that Anna has taught me in her program is to take imperfect action. Dont wait until you have the perfect moment  until you have the perfect campaign, the perfect body, or the perfect moment to start. Just take action today! Were taking action on her advice even when I wasnt sure and had no idea about what to do. Ive turned my hobby of writing blog posts into a successful community of career-minded women. Just this last month, Ive increased my traffic by over 300%! This is all down to taking imperfect action on a consistent basis. The Corporate Rescue Plan want to only help you build your business that you love. It will also give you the tools and support to take action on a system basis. Theres an amazing community that Anna has actually set up that its essentially my life that would get me through everything. To Anna and her wonderful team at Classy Career Girl, thank you a thousand times for this program and those who would be watching, may your day be filled with light and love! Bye-bye. Hi, Im Mary Ellen Roth. I started my own business as an Online Learning Consultant at maryellenroth.org.  I started working with Anna last January in the Corporate Rescue Plan. I would still be floundering around trying to get everything perfect and worrying that my business wasnt good enough, but thats all behind me now. Ive accomplished so much in the past few months and then Im both amazed and really proud to be here sharing this with you. Ive built up a new website, started a Facebook marketing campaign, started my first email list and added a few well-paying clients. Most importantly, Ive been able to do this expressing my authentic self. I believe my materials and programs really reflect who I am and the women that Im here to serve. This is a gift that Anna has given to me. The Corporate Rescue Plan is the second program Ive done with Anna. I have that much respect and admiration for her so that I trust everything she designs for us. She really knows our struggles shes been there herself. The women she has attracted to this course are intelligent and offer very thoughtful support to each other in our Facebook community groups. And we also follow each others Facebook pages and businesses and like to share resources with each other. Its an awesome benefit! Anna is an inspiring leader. I love that the focus is not strictly on business but learning about work-life balance and keeping our priorities straight. I really needed that help. That was me. If you dont have a coach by now, you should absolutely contact Anna to sign up for the Corporate Rescue Plan. All of us have good intentions but without comfy goals support and someone to be accountable to, we get nowhere. Anna has given us tremendous value not only from her own expertise but she shares generously information she gets from experts. We have a great community of women here. I hope youll join us. Thanks! Alright, are you ready to make your business startup dreams happen this year just like these ladies? If so,  you can start today by downloading our Corporate Rescue Plan business start-up checklists.

Ready For A Little Spring . . . Reading

Ready For A Little Spring . . . Reading Spring is coming, and its my favorite time of the year.  One of my favorite things to do is grab a book, a cup of coffee, and head for that sunshine that beckons just out on the patio.  Time for some spring reading ! While Im certainly glad to have you as a Ms Career Girl reader, I hope you also have a regular reading habit.  There are a ton of benefits to reading.  These are just a few of those (from Lifehack.com) Mental Stimulation. Stress Reduction. Knowledge. Vocabulary Expansion. Memory Improvement. Stronger Analytical Thinking Skills. Improved Focus and Concentration. Wondering what to read?  Theres no lack of great reads out there, from classics to insightful and practical guides to every aspect of life.   Heres seven great springtime reads that came our way recently that are worth a look. The A Player Just like back in school, an A player is in the top 10%.  And that position is as much for you as anyone.  Anyone can be an A player so make the decision and commitment to six factors the author says are critical:  A service mindset, a can-do attitude, a caring heart, ownership, accountability, and responsibility.  Starting with a personal assessment for the reader and numerous examples of how to improve, the book shows you how to be an A Player, or how to create and manage an A Team. Fearless And Free Career burnout?  Deadend job?  If its time to reinvent yourself, rebrand your image, or relaunch your career, this book inspires you to take it on.   As career or entrepreneurial women, were often held back by internal and external expectations.  But what if you erased those expectations and painted a new reality for yourself?  Or, as the author says, decided to create your own serendipity?   Shell show you how you can. Managing Annoying People Whether youre the manager or aspiring to such a sometimes loathsome position, theres one thing for sure.  Youre going to have to know how to deal with odd, quirky, and sometimes downright annoying people.  Most of the time, you wont be able to do a lot to change them, because its just their personality.  But you can control how you handle them, and yourself.  The author of this short but to-the-point read nails it. Unemployable:  How To Be Successfully Unemployed Thinking about taking the leap to entrepreneurship?  There may be a variety of reasons to choose that path, but theres one common thread: we want to create our own destiny.  And were so determined and valuable in that pursuit that the ultimate  goal is to become unemployable.  What a great thing it will be when you can say to some would-be employer you cant afford me.   Get inspired to start on your path today. Positive Thinking Will Never Change Your Life But This Book Will Not, thats not my endorsement of the book.  Its the title.  While I think the title is a little gimmicky, the author David Essel does a good job of driving home the reality of life and success.   You can do all the chanting, wishing, and visualizing you want to.  The key ingredient to making progress is taking action.  If youve found less than satisfactory results from following the advice of the countless gurus out there, this book delivers a clear message that your results are up to you. Goats Of Anarchy Its subtitle is A Womans Quest To Save The World One Goat At A Time.  And thats a hint as to what drove the author to give up a successful career and launch her own goat rescue.  I dont know which is more inspiring, her personal story and the narrative she includes about her little rescues, or the heartwarming pictures.  If youre an animal lover of any kind, consider this one not only for your own pleasure but also for a place as a conversation piece on your coffee table. One Minute Mentoring If youre tired of the typical hot-to and self-help books, this one is for you.  Short and full of great ideas, instead of the usual and sometimes dry step-by-step presentation the author uses a fictional story to make his points.  If you read the recent article by Jackie LaMar on mentoring, this is a great follow up.  Whether you are thinking about getting a mentor or being one, this is an easy reading reference.

Want to Win your Next Job Interview Use Mirroring

Want to Win your Next Job Interview Use Mirroring Want to Win your Next Job Interview? Use Mirroring The day of your job interview has finally arrived. As you enter the building fully prepared for your meeting ahead, you are confident that your work experience and skills are exactly what they are looking for.You are quietly confident that this job is going to be yours. After all, you are not the shy and retiring type. You get on well with most people and you can hold a conversation with anyone from all walks of life. You have prepared well for your interview and you are ready to sell yourself. As you walk confidently into the interview room and offer your hand for a firm but friendly greeting, you notice that your interviewer flinches at your touch. Not a great start, but you shrug it off. Maybe they are new to the job themselves and are not used to interviewing people, or they are just having a bad day â€" who knows? You settle down in your seat and await the start of their questioning.Your interviewer really is having a bad time of it. They are nervously sweating with their hea d down, shuffling through pages or paperwork. The questions start without any eye contact. He asks,“Why do you want this job?” You wait for him to look up from the papers to meet your gaze. He doesnt look up.You take a deep breath and puff out your chest, launching into your confident speech about how the position is perfect for you and how you can help the company achieve their goals. You talk about the appealing nature of the company culture and how you will be able to fit in well and work in great cooperation with the team.Once you have finished your speech, you notice that the interviewer still isnt giving you any eye contact and in fact, he seems to be more nervous and uncomfortable than ever. You decide to take control of the situation and answer every question that he mumbles with a loud and confident response.Your interview just ends. You leave the room. You never hear back from them.ButWhat Went Wrong? No matter how suited to a particular job you may be, there is always the hurdle of the job interview to get over before you can win the post. The person interviewing you holds the key to your future career in their hands, so if you handle your interview wrong, then you will never be given that key. Yes, it is fantastic to be well prepared and confident for your job interview, but if you dont meet the needs of your interviewer on the day, then you can kiss that job goodbye. Obviously in this case there was a clash of personality between you and your interviewer. He came across as quite introverted and shy, but you came across as loud, overpowering and dominant.Instead of stopping to consider your interviewers needs, you took charge of the interview, which made him even more nervous and uncomfortable. To win at an interview you need to win over and build a rapport with your interviewer if you want your job application to progress any further.Introducing the Art of Mirroring! The Mirroring Technique is a great way to break the ice with someone you don t know and helps to establish a level of trust and understanding between the two of you. Mirroring is about connecting with someone so they can grow to trust you. Subconsciously, they will find subtle similarities that you share that will connect both of you.Simply put, mirroring someone is the art of adopting their behaviours, reactions, manner of speech and posture. When you mirror someone well, it is like you are projecting a mirror image of that person and this can help you greatly during your job interview. Why is Mirroring so good?Just like when you make friends, you tend to like and be drawn to people with similar tastes to yourself. People generally trust those who are very similar to themselves. Mirroring your interviewer will help to put them at ease and will make the conversation flow more smoothly between you during your interview. You have to try to put yourself in your interviewers shoes and look at things from their perspective. Going back to the interview scenario ment ioned at the beginning, had you lowered your tone of voice and acted more thoughtfully, your interviewer would have felt less intimidated by you. By making them feel more at ease with you the conversation would have flowed much better and a rapport could have been built between you.Be careful not to over do it!Remember that mirroring is NOT mimicking. Your interviewer should never feel like you are copying them â€" it is much more subtle than that. Never copycat their moves or mannerisms immediately afterwards. If your interviewer brushes their brow, scratches their nose or tilts their head to one side, wait for about 45 seconds before doing something similar.Listen carefully to the type of language they use. When they are talking about the job and use descriptive words â€" use the same words in your response. So if you have experience in copywriting but they refer to this as feature writing, then use feature writing in your language. Only mirror positive body language and speech . If your interviewer has a bug-bear about something and they go a little off track and start to act frustrated or annoyed, you really do not want to mirror that language! If this should happen, remain positive and relaxed. This should help bring the focus back to your interview and improve the atmosphere once again.Try not to let your mirroring run away with you. Sometimes it is easy to get distracted by observing their behaviour and trying to mirror their mannerisms without paying full attention to the questions you are being asked. It makes it easier for you to answer your interview questions if you use mirroring to see things from their perspective. Why not practice mirroring before your next interview and see how you get on. Try it out on family and friends. When done right, mirroring can help strengthen your bond with your friends and helps you see things from their point of view too. previous article Celebrating 20,000 Downloads a Key Moment on Freesumes.com! next article Free Female Resume Template Purple Pop you might also likeWhy Do You Want to Work Here? 5 Job Search Links for College Grads and Entry Level Jobs - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Antoine de Saint-Exupry So what exactly is an entry level job? According to Wikipedia (and this is an excerpt) An entry-level job is a job that is normally designed or designated for recent graduates of a given discipline, and doesnt ask for prior experience in the field or profession. These may require some on-site training. Now Im not sure that is a perfect definition, because not all entry level jobs are for college grads. There are many entry level jobs for people who have not attended college or are college students. So how about this one from BusinessDictionary.com- Bottom-level employment in a firm which usually requires ordinary-level of education, training, and experience qualifications. It gives a recruit the benefit of a gainful occupation, opportunity to learn and gain experience, and serves as a stepping-stone for higher-level jobs.. Still doesnt sound like the best definition but it is a better definition than the first one. Todays post is about finding the best companies for entry level jobs (however they are defined). Top Entry Level Employers This is the list for entry level jobs from Collegegrad.com. The companies are ranked based on the estimated entry level hires. While you are on the page, take a look at all of the related links for your career. This is followed by a job search box, with advanced search and a job search directory to the right of the search box. Below this is a section for Search Top Entry Level Jobs on the left and recent job postings on the right hand side of the page. Monster College This is Monster.coms recent college grad and entry level job site. Just click Search Entry-Level jobs, enter your criteria and you are on your way.
